LEATHER JACKETS

Content Pic

A potential problem you could have with your lawn is leatherjacket infestation, these are nasty little grubs which are laid by the crane fly or ( daddy longlegs ) they burrow below the soil and feed like mad on your grass roots. They are usually about 1" long grey in colour and have a pair of scissor like fangs which can rip through the roots quite easily, they have an enormous appertite and will quite quickly destroy a lawn in weeks. The usual pattern is to lay there eggs around late summer time, ( September ) the grubs can then feed to their hearts content undetecetd, of course until you notice bare or brown patches of dead grass forming, we can quite easily treat this problem with chemical but first you have to keep a vigilant eye out for the little fellows, if you notice quite a lot of these crane flys flying in and out of your lawn, the chance is that they have left some of their eggs behind, we always advice you to have a treatment for this, the best time for this treatment is to the end of September early October as it best to be safe than sorry.
