TIPS ON MOWING

Content PicMowing your lawn is not an exact science, its more of common sense really, scalping your lawn can lead to lots of problems, most lawn grasses should be allowed to mature so that the leaf can take in all the natural goodness it needs to establish a good healthy sward / root ball, scalping a lawn will encourage moss, broad leaf weeds and disease, remember its the leaf of the grass that gives you the colour.

TIMINGS

We recommend that you start cutting your grass from early March through to the end of October, weather permitting of course. Often but little is the golden rule, you should cut the grass about twice a week when it is growing vigorously, down to once a week when the weather is hot and the grass slows down. If you return from holiday to find that the grass has grown quite long, try cutting your grass in stages, take the top off on the first cut, reduce the height on the next cut a few days later, until you have the desired height. The type of mower we recommend for the average lawn is a rotary mower.

GOLDEN RULE

Cut the lawn often, but not too close, adopting this method will reduce excess leaf growth. The grass assumes a dwarf habit and the production of side shoots is stimulated, it is the development of these shoots which thickens the lawn. Another tip is to change the direction of your cut, by doing this you will avoid the tram lines effect from constant wheel pressure in the same spot.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE

Make sure your mower blades are kept sharp, by doing this you will prevent the grass from being torn and ripped, this often makes a lawns appearance shabby as the ripped grass often yellows, rember to have the base plate sharpened also. If you are keen to produce stripes on you lawn, then a mower with a rear roller is just the job, having a rear roller on your mower will also prevent you taking chunks out of the lawn when your back wheel drops of the lawn edging.
